What Is a Standing Seam Metal Roof?

A standing seam metal roofing is a type of high-quality roofing system that is attached using raised seams. The seams are raised above the level of the panel so that they can be interlocked, providing a watertight seal. This type of roofing system is very durable and is able to withstand severe weather conditions, making it an excellent choice for roofing services.

How Much Does Standing Seam Metal Roofing Cost?

If you are interested in getting your metal roofing and getting a standing seam metal roof, it could cost you about  $6.80 to $10.50 per square foot. A typical 1,500-square-foot standing seam metal roof costs approximately $13,000 depending on the manufacturer and roofing contractor you are working with.

This cost however is just a general estimate, and the actual price could be more or less depending on a few different factors.

These can include:

  • The geographical location of where you live
  • The specific type of metal roofing you want
  • The slope and pitch of your roof
  • Whether or not your home is a one-story or two-story house
  • If your home has an existing roof that will need to be removed first

The best way to get an accurate estimate for your standing seam metal roof is to contact a local roofing contractor in New Orleans and have them come out to take a look at your specific project.

Standing Seam Panel Profile Types

  • Batten Panel Profiles

A standing seam metal panel profile type that you could get in the market is the batten panel profile. This is when there are 2 legs on the panels that would be in roll form, and then they are butting one another.

When it comes to the batten panel profiles, there are two types of services that you could get. The first one is the Tee Seams, which are engineered to stay in place as they are nailed down so they would be able to withstand harsh weather. You would be able to use this on steep and low slopes, and you could replace and repair the panels of the seam in a breeze.

The other type of batten panel profile is called the snap caps. The snap caps are panels legs that would be snapped in place without having to put it on any kind of mechanical seaming whatsoever. You could put this on curved panels. This type of panel is more for decorative aesthetics rather than for function.

  • Fastener Flange or Nail Flange Profiles

The fastener flange is also called the nail flange. This is very similar to the snap-lock panel system except they are fastened down by a male leg on the metal panel listed as being clipped down. There is a female leg that would be snapped once the fasteners are in place.

The nail flange system is perfect when you are using it for residential roof systems since they are the cheapest option out of all of the other standing seam panel profile types since there are little to no accessories that come with it.

There is a lack of engineering that comes with the nail flange, which is why not a lot of people get it. Nail flanges seem to follow the imperfections of the roof deck, they can not be put on low slopes, it tends to be difficult to snap them together, and they tend to limit any possible chances of expansion and contraction since they are pinned.

  • Mechanical Lock Profiles

One of the other common standing seam roofing would have to be the mechanical lock profiles. This series would include all of these panels that are in a roll form but they have these specific edges that would then line up with each other.

There are 2 kinds of mechanical lock profiles. First, we have the single lock, which would only include one fold on the seam, or sometimes the fold is in a 90-degree position. This kind of lock would be able to perform in a milder environment and it is so much easier to replace the panel that may have been damaged compared to the double lock.

Now, the other mechanical lock system is the double lock. These systems would have one more compared to the other, which means there are 2 folds on the seam, which is why it has double on the name.

These types of systems would be perfect for low-slops applications since they double and they are so much better because there is this big chance that your panels would be unseamed.

  • Snap-Lock Profiles

Last but not least, we have the snap-lock systems. When it comes to this Standing seam roof profile, you are only allowed to install it on roofs that are 3/12 and above to be approved by the manufacturer.

They are made out of a series of panels that would be roll-formed carefully. They have these shaped edges that would be snapped together, but you would not necessarily need a mechanic seaming when you get this profile installed.

You are going to have to install this roof system properly so that you could use them in any kind of environment. Compared to the other standing seam panel profile types, this would require you to do less labor and it is cheaper in general.

Standing Seam Roof Options

  • Seam Heights

Metal Standing Seam Roofing-Big Easy RoofersWith standing seams, the height would differ depending on how big your roofs are. A standing seam metal system would usually be one inch to three inches, but the most common height would have to be about one and a half inches to two inches.

Snap-lock systems, on the other hand, usually range about one and 3/4.

  • Panel Widths

When it comes to the widths of the panels, it would generally depend on the manufacturer that you are getting your standing seam metal roofs.

But you could expect that the most common would have to be about 16-inches, but it could range from 12 inches to 18-inches. You could go and check with your manufacturer or contractor because you need to make sure it would be able to fit your home.

  • Thicknesses

Some of the metals that are going to be used on your roof would affect the thickness of your seam roof panel. There is a lot of metal coil to choose from for your roofing but you would usually see standing seam metal to be between 22 and 26 gauges. But usually, the most common steel thickness would have to be around 24-gauge.

  • Striations, Rib Rollers, or Stiffening Ribs

The patterns that you could see on your metal roofing are called the striations which would be able to consider as an assist when you are installing your metal roof. These would be able to help reduce some of the oil canning visibility. You could get the flat, clip relief, striated, and ribbed striations for your metal standing seam roofs.
